Kybella in Miami

A common misconception is that the only way to get rid of excess fat or skin under the chin is through a surgical lift or tightening procedure. However, going under the knife comes with a whole host of risks and potential complications which is why our team here at the Miami Center for Dermatology are such fans of Kybella!

What is Kybella?

If you have fat beneath your chin that you’ve always wanted to get rid of, you are not alone. You may have opted out of eliminating this fat in the past because you were unwilling to go through invasive surgeries. However, the KYBELLA®, also known as “Kybella” treatment in Miami has provided a solution to this issue without surgery.

Kybella has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It is an injection to reduce double chin fat, and in many cases, alleviates the circumstance altogether. The treatment is for adults with excessive fat beneath the chin, also referred to as submental fat.

As a doctor of osteopathy, Dr. Longwill is trained to consider complete physical and emotional conditions before performing a treatment on any patient. She understands the importance of focusing on an entire individual instead of just their skin, meaning she will pay diligent attention to your needs specifically before suggesting a Kybella treatment. This attention to the patient is important because it helps to avoid potential health risks that can arise from certain procedures.

How Does Kybella Work?

The active ingredient in KYBELLA® is synthetic deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in breaking down and absorbing dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath the chin, Kybella destroys fat cells, resulting in a noticeable reduction in fullness under the chin. Once destroyed, these cells can no longer store or accumulate fat, so further treatment is not expected once you reach your desired aesthetic goal.

What Should I Expect?

Before starting treatment, your healthcare specialist will examine the area under and around your chin to determine if Kybella in Miami is right for you. Then, your specialist will tailor your treatment to the amount of fat under the chin and your aesthetic goals.

Since everyone’s chin profile is different, the number of treatments varies from patient to patient. Your healthcare specialist will help determine how many treatment sessions you need based on the amount and distribution of your submental fat and your treatment goals. Each KYBELLA® treatment session is given at least one month apart, and you should not receive more than six treatments. In clinical studies, 59% of patients received six treatments.

In terms of downtime and the recovery process after Kybella, it will be nowhere near as extensive or debilitating as a surgical procedure for the face, as Kybella is much less invasive. However, it’s completely normal to experience some swelling, bruising, or numbness under your chin after the treatment.

What We Believe

With a holistic clinical approach, which involves first listening to patients concerns, we thoroughly diagnose and explain their individual treatment options.

Be sure to inform your healthcare professional if you develop an uneven smile, facial muscle weakness, difficulty swallowing, or injection site problems such as bruising, hair loss, open sores (ulcers), and damage and tissue cell death (necrosis) around the injection site. Call your healthcare provider if you develop open sores or drainage from the treatment area.

Consult With Your Doctor

Before going through with Kybella, you should talk to your doctor about the following topics:

  • If you have plans to have surgery on your face, neck, or chin
  • If you have had cosmetic treatments on your face, neck, or chin
  • If you have had or have medical conditions in or near the neck area
  • If you have had or have trouble swallowing
  • If you have bleeding problems
  • If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant (it is unknown if KYBELLA® will harm your unborn baby, so it is best to opt-out of the treatment when you are pregnant or plan on getting pregnant in the near future.)
  • If you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed (it is not known if KYBELLA® passes into your breast milk)
  • If you are taking any medications, especially blood thinners

Is Kybella Right for Me?

Kybell in Miami is an effective (and often the best) option for patients who want a more youthful appearance. Extra skin or fat under the chin is a natural part of growing older or even in cases of extreme weight loss where patients are left with sagging skin. Kybella could be a great option for you if you identify with any of the following:

  • You’re unhappy or self-conscious with the fat under your chin, also known as submental fullness
  • You feel the condition makes you look older or heavier than you actually are
  • You don’t want to have surgery but you want to change the submental fullness of your chin
  • You eat well and exercise, but submental fullness does not go away
