Cancer Therapy in Miami
How Common Is Skin Cancer?
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, one out of five Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their life. Although it may seem bad, skin cancer is highly curable if detected and treated early. Until now, the primary course of treatment for all types of skin cancer was surgery. But now Miami Center for Dermatology in South Miami, Florida, offers a safe, non-invasive way to treat non-melanoma skin cancer with its new superficial radiation therapy (SRT) machine.
Known as the SRT-100™ there are only 100 of the specially-designed machines available to dermatology offices across the country. Miami Center for Dermatology is the first dermatology practice in Miami, and one of the few in Florida, to offer the non-surgical skin cancer treatment.
“We have known for many years that skin cancer is treatable with radiation, but this kind of technology wasn’t advanced enough to deliver adequate results until today,” explains Dr. Longwill, “This new machine should reduce the need for skin cancer surgeries in some patients and potentially offer a better cosmetic outcome.”
The SRT-100 can be safely used to treat non-melanoma skin cancer, including basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas, on the face and other areas of the body. SRT is a low energy radiotherapy that goes no deeper than the thickness of the skin. It is a proven non-invasive procedure that has been used to treat non-melanoma skin cancer for over 50 years and is highly recognized and reimbursable by most insurance companies. Because the superficial x-rays concentrate radiation dose on the skin surface, the treatment has several advantages over surgical procedures.
The advantages of SRT-100 skin cancer
Very short procedure time
No anesthesia requirement
Minimal to no scarring
Virtually no post-surgical infections
Lesser chance for recurrence
Faster healing process
Virtually no need for reconstruction after procedure
“Dr. Longwill’s Miami Center for Dermatology treats 1,000’s skin cancer case a year, we expect this new treatment to be of aid to our patients. Most importantly, the SRT-100 has a cure rate of 95 to 98 percent.”
