5 Rosacea Skincare Secrets Dermatologists Tell Their Patients

Rosacea Awareness Month is coming to a close, but that doesn’t mean our seasoned dermatologists don’t have more useful information to share! As both medical and cosmetic professionals, our dermatologists know how to treat rosacea, and want to give you their best-kept secrets that you absolutely need to start incorporating into your skincare routine. Trust us, Skin Care for Rosacea isn’t as hard as it seems.

Choose the right products!

An essential step in having the right regimen for your skin is choosing the right products. Skincare for rosacea is actually way more common than you might think, you just have to make sure the ingredients won’t irritate your sensitive skin. Stay away from products that contain things like menthol, alcohol, sodium lauryl sulfate, and fragrances, The last thing your irritated complexion needs is to be irritated even more, so choose gentle products from trusted skincare brands, such as Avéne.

For Rosacea Awareness Month, all of the Avéne products we provide right here at the Miami Center for Dermatology are 10% off, and our skin experts love them. We also provide other skincare items that are great for rosacea, such as the Lytic Tx Cream from Epionce, and our very own custom Green Tea Body Lotion.

Build a cleansing routine.

You might be intimidated by this step, but trust us, it is so vital to your skin’s health. Because your skin is irritated, you probably feel the need to wash it less often so as not to agitate it. However, this ultimately does more harm than good. Letting your skin accumulate bacteria and dirt every day will only irritate it more, so cleansing it twice a day is what our dermatologists highly recommend.

Once you have the right products and the most gentle skin care for rosacea that won’t aggravate your delicate cells, cleansing once in the morning and once at night will be no problem. Some helpful tips are to apply your cleanser lightly in circular motions, rinse off all your cleanser using lukewarm water, and pat your face dry with a clean, soft towel.

Don’t forget to moisturize.

No matter your skin type, moisturizing is essential. Countless studies show that applying rosacea-friendly moisturizers to your skin daily can reduce roughness, dry patches, and itchy irritation. Moisturizer with the right ingredients can even help your other rosacea treatments work even better, making your skincare routine that much more effective.

Shield yourself from the sun.

Sunscreen is also an essential product when deciding on your skincare for rosacea! Whether you suffer from this condition or not, protecting your complexion from the sun’s harmful rays should always be one of your main skincare concerns. Particularly for those with rosacea, the sun can exasperate your skin and cause it to flare up, so wear sunscreen every day—no matter the weather.

Make sure to choose a sunscreen that has zinc oxide, silicone, an SPF higher than 30, and broad-spectrum protection. We have plenty of sunscreen options for you right in our convenient online shop!

Always be gentle.

This goes without saying, but it’s a necessary reminder: be gentle with your skin. This means you should stay away from anything that can inflame your skin and provoke a rosacea flare-up. While those facial sponges and special skincare brushes look appealing, they will probably only worsen your skin condition. Avoid harsh exfoliants or anything that will scrub and rub your face.
